Habitat: Engineering in a Simulated Audible Ecosystem

چکیده

This paper introduces a novel approach to generating audio or visual heterogeneity by simulating multi-level habitat formation by ecosystemengineer organisms. Ecosystem engineers generate habitat by modulation of environmental factors, such as erosion or radiation exposure, and provision of substrate. We describe Habitat, a simulation that runs on a two-dimensional grid occupied by an evolving population of stationary agents. The bodies of these agents provide local, differentiated habitat for new agents. Agents evolve using a conventional evolutionary algorithm that acts on their habitat preferences, habitat provision and lifespan, to populate the space and one another. This generates heterogeneous, dynamic structures that have been used in a prototype sonic artwork and simple visualisation.

Habitat Simulation Technique as a Powerful Tool for Instream Flow Needs Assessment and River Ecosystem Management

Instream flow needs (IFN) assessment studies are performed to provide guidelines for stream water management and to assess the impacts of different water projects such as weirs, dams and stream diversions on the available fish habitat. The physical habitat simulation is one of the IFN assessment methods and also a powerful tool in management of river ecosystem that has not become a common metho...

An Ecosystem Model for Exploring Lake Restoration Effects on Fish Communities and Fisheries in Florida

Developing quantitative ecosystem–scale expectations of habitat restoration projects and examining trade-offs associated with alternative approaches has been a challenge for restoration ecology. Many of the largest freshwater lake restoration projects have occurred in Florida to remediate degradation to vegetated littoral habitats resulting from stabilized water levels, but effects across lake ...

Comparing ecosystem engineering efficiency of two plant species with contrasting growth strategies.

Many ecosystems are greatly affected by ecosystem engineering, such as coastal salt marshes, where macrophytes trap sediment by reducing hydrodynamic energy. Nevertheless, little is known about the costs and benefits that are imposed on engineering species by the traits that underlie their ecosystem engineering capacity. We addressed this topic by comparing ecosystem engineering efficiency defi...

When does ecosystem engineering cause invasion and species replacement?

Introduced exotic species can dominate communities and replace native species that should be better adapted to their local environment, a paradox that is usually explained by the absence of natural enemies and by habitat alteration resulting from anthropogenic disturbance. Additionally, introduced species can enhance their invasion success and impact on native species by modifying selection pre...
